Exploring High Mountain Park Reserve: North Jersey’s Best Hidden Hike

Hey, I’m Sal - but most people know me as Social Gal. I chase chaos, beauty, and big energy across New Jersey, turning late-night comedy sets, underground art shows, and hometown legends into stories that *hit*. If it’s weird, raw, or lowkey iconic, I’m already three steps ahead with a notebook and a hot take. I almost died after being diagnosed with heart cancer and documented it all on online in hopes I could leave something behind if I die. Surprisingly, I survived but my love for documentation never died. I came out louder, bolder, and more in love with life than ever. I believe the best stories aren’t polished - they’re real, messy, and full of soul. That’s what I bring to NJ Radar. Catch me wherever the vibes are real, the people are unfiltered, and the stories *actually matter*.

The Best North Jersey Hike You Haven’t Done Yet

If you’re looking for a trail that makes you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere while still being just minutes from civilization, High Mountain Park Preserve in Wayne is your next adventure. This place is 1,153 acres of pure, untamed Jersey wilderness, packed with rugged trails, rare plant life, and - oh yeah - one of the best skyline views of NYC you’ll ever find on this side of the Hudson.

The Hike: A Little Sweat, A Big Reward

WARNING: This isn’t a “flip-flops and iced coffee” kind of walk. High Mountain’s trails stretch over 11.5 miles, ranging from peaceful wooded paths to steep, rocky climbs that’ll have your calves questioning your life choices.

But trust me, the grind is worth it.

The Summit Trail takes you straight to the highest point in the Watchung Mountains at 879 feet. And when you get there?

A panoramic view of the New York City skyline that makes every uphill step worth it. It’s like Jersey saying, “Yeah, we’ve got the best views, too.”

Wildlife, Rare Plants & That ‘NJ Untouched’ Vibe

Don’t get it twisted though…High Mountain isn’t just about the views, it’s an actual ecological goldmine.

Over 380 species of plants grow here, including rare finds like Torrey’s mountain mint and basil-leaved mountain mint (yes, fancy mint flex). And if you’re into wildlife spotting, keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, flying squirrels, and an army of chipmunks living their best lives. Birdwatchers, you’re in luck - raptors and songbirds love this place, too.

Ancient Rocks & Revolutionary War Secrets

Aside from wildlife, it’s also an geological and historical jackpot. The volcanic bedrock here is over 130 million years old. And back in the day, during the American Revolution, these high points were used as strategic lookout posts. So yeah, when you’re standing at the summit taking selfies, just know you’re literally in a place where history went down.
